It is proposed for the purpose of continuous monitoring of the entire side wall of an empty beverage bottle moving at a high transport speed for each bottle to be rotated, during its feed movement through the beam path between an illuminating source and an electronic image convertor, by 360 DEG relative to its longitudinal axis, the image convertor synchronously tracking the feed movement of the bottle as the latter rotates and in this case being permanently directed onto the longitudinal axis of the relevant bottle.
