Panoramic X-ray apparatus for utilization in dental and maxillary medicine with an X-ray unit surrounding the head of the patient at the level of the area to be represented and comprised of an X radiation source traversing the head and of a pivoting film cassette situated facing the X radiation source, with means for detecting the individual form of the area to be represented, means for calculating the X-ray unit path resulting from the individual form of the area to be represented and which enables to traverse all the area to be represented by the X-ray source at right angle with respect to its tangent, as well as means for guiding the X-ray unit on the calculated path. During the detection of the form of the area to be represented by means of ultra-sounds, it is possible to obtain a panoramic representation of superficial and even deep regions of the cranium which are at a higher level than the dental arch. The panoramic X-ray apparatus preferably comprises a detection means for detecting the individual form which is a unit which scans a bitting templet previously established from the top and the bottom, as it were by light optics.
