The front and rear ends of the magnetic recording tape are optically determined. A sensor insertion opening (2) is provided in the casette (1) to one side of the tape feeding path, and a reflecting surface (7) is arranged in the casette (1) on the other side of the tape feeding path (8) in such a way that the sensor insertion opening (2) and the reflecting surface (7) are arranged opposite each other with the magnetic recording tape positioned in between. The apparatus using the casette is provided with a sensor bar (4), which bears a light-emitting element (5) and a photodetector (6). When the casette is loaded into the apparatus, the sensor bar (4) is inserted in the sensor insertion opening (2) in such a way that it protrudes into the interior of the casette (1). The light sent out by the light-emitting element (5) on the sensor bar (4) passes through the tape, impinges on the reflecting surface (7), is thereby in turn passed back, passing throught the tape, and impinges on the photodetector (6). <IMAGE>
