A bloated cellular prod. is prepd. by (a) mixing naturally occuring clayey material particles and an aq. soln. contg. dissolved nonoxidising flux and a bloating agent contg. reactable C to disperse and absorb the soln. into the clayey particles, (b) heating at a temp. and for a time sufficient to drive liq. from the soln. and cause dissolved flux and bloating agent to migrate to the particle surfaces and deposit there as water is driven off, (c) continuing heating at a temp. at which flux and bloating agent become molten and flow into the particles and (d) continuing heating at over 2100 degrees F until O contained in the clayey material reacts with C to produce a gaseous C oxide and the clayey particles become viscous, the bloating agent being so evenly dispersed in the clayey material that the gases are trapped, forming a cellular structure. The prod. has a good cellular structure and is useful as lightweight, heat insulating and fire resistant building materials, etc. The clayey material is clay or shale, esp. bentonite, fluxing agent is from hydroxides and phosphates of Na, K and Li and the bloating agent is sugar. The total time of heating steps is 10-120 min.
|
