The throttle after the condenser cooler reduces the intermediate stage pressure of the compressor and condensed cooling agent which is then fed to a separator. The vapour thus generated is recycled to the relevent intermediate stage, whilst the liquid cooling agent, after further pressure reduction and heat absorption, is fed to the compressor inlet. By altering the supply or discharge of the separator, a reduction is achieved in the mass flow, or in the enthalpy increase of the cooling agent in one or more stages of the compressor.
