A mercury/mercurous sulphate or mercury/mercurous chloride reference electrode is prepared by agitating mercurous sulphate or mercurous chloride with mercury until a skin forms; applying a layer of mercury to a metal electrode holder; and then applying over the layer of mercury a layer of the skin. The reference electrode may be used in an electrochemical gas sensor sensitive to hydrogen or sulphur dioxide or ammonia gas. For sensing hydrogen or sulphur dioxide, the sulphate form is used together with a lead/lead dioxide counter electrode & a metallised membrane working electrode. For sensing ammonia, the counter electrode is silver/silver oxide. <IMAGE> |
