The process comprises prodn. of vincaminic acid by hydrolysis of vincamine in alkaline medium. The acid is then reacted with ethyl bromide in alkaline medium, to give ethyl vincaminate. - This latter is dehydrated in the presence of dimethyl sulphoxide, to give ethyl apovincaminate of formula (I).
