A vehicle cleaning apparatus comprises a brush 6 suspended from a brush-carrying arm 7 which is fast with a shaft 5 journalled in a free end of a support arm 4, the arm 4 being pivotally mounted by a shaft 3 in brackets 2, 2<SP>1</SP> on a portal frame 1, and wheels 10 and 14 fast with the shaft 5 and bracket 2 respectively being connected by a transmission mechanism such that rotation of the brush-carrying arm 7 causes simultaneous rotation of the support arm 4 at a rotational speed higher than that of the arm 7. The transmission mechanism comprises a gearwheel 12 and chain sprocket wheel 13, both carried by an intermediate shaft 11 journalled in the arm 4, the gear-wheel 12 meshing with gearwheel 10 and the sprocket wheel 13 being connected to chain sprocket wheel 14 by a chain 15. The support arm 4 carries a projection 19 which is biased to abutment with a stop 18 on the frame 1 by a counterweight 17 on a flexible cable 17<SP>1</SP>, but the arm 4 is moved away from this position of abutment when a vehicle contacts the brush 6, exerting pressure between the brush and vehicle.
