PURPOSE:The titled composition suitable as a TN type liquid crystal display element, capable of lowering threshold voltage of the element and of improving its temperature dependence, comprising a first component containing a specific biphenyl derivative, etc., a second component, etc. CONSTITUTION:The aimed composition comprising (A) 10-80 first component, a compound shown by formula I [preferably containing 10-40wt% compound shown by formula II and 10-40wt% compound shown by formula III] and (B) 20-90wt% second component, etc., [preferably compound shown by formula IV (l is 1 or 2)].
