A process is described for purifying crude cyanogen chloride which is contaminated with chlorine. According to this process, the crude cyanogen chloride is brought into contact, at a temperature of 20-50 DEG C, with an aqueous solution of an iron (II) salt and the chlorine-free cyanogen chloride is then absorbed in an organic solvent. The cyanogen chloride solution thus obtained can be used directly for further reactions.
