PURPOSE:To obtain titled polymer flexible even at low temperatures, thus useful for hoses, etc., by dissolving polyethylene in a halogenated hydrocarbon, followed by making the temperature of the resulting solution drop to a given range and by the reaction with sulfuryl chloride using a radical generator as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An autoclave is charged with polyethylene and a halogenated hydrocarbon (e.g. carbon tetrachloride), followed by raising temperature at a constant rate under pressure, resulting in decreased rising rate in temperature in the range 96-101 deg.C and dissolution of the polyethylene in the solvent. The homogeneous solution thus produced is then made to drop in its temperature, to make the solution stabilized in the polyethylene-dissolving temperature range or lower range, followed by carrying out the reaction with sulfuryl chloride using a radical generator as a catalyst, thus obtaining the objective polymer.
