The ink jet printer has a stabiliser for the ink droplet stream which facilitates the production of high quality printing after the printer has ceased operation for any length of time. The necessary control circuit has a comparator (7) and an amplifier unit which, depending on the desired value of droplet frequency as prescribed via a desired value of droplet frequency as prescribed pressure of the liquid via the pump unit (14). A storage unit (9) holds the optimum value of the pressure of the printing liquid corresponding to the particular desired value of droplet frequency. A search circuit seeks out the operational region of the ink jet printer and comprises a control for adjusting the desired frequency.
