PURPOSE:To facilitate the formation of a pattern, to improve the wear resistance and to prevent the deterioration of characteristics of an MR film due to the Joule heat, by providing a soft magnetic film to the end surface opposite to the rubbing surface of a magneto-resistance effect magnetic film of the MR film. CONSTITUTION:A soft magnetic film 4 of high permeability having an axis of easy magnetization in the intrasurface direction of an MR film 2 is provided near the end part opposite to the tape rubbing surface 6 of the film 2 via an insulated film 3. A coil 5 is set contiguously to the film 4 to apply a bias current. Then a magnetic field generated by the bias current is applied to the film 2 via the film 4. Thus a bias conductor film or the film 4 is removed from the place near the tape contact surface. This head improves both durability and characteristics of an MR head. |
