The material may be carpet material, or material for towels, handkerchiefs etc.. A video camera moved step-wise produces an image of the region to either side of the cutting line, or of the region downstream of this line if the material passing is the last end of equal-patterned material. - The resulting electronic signals are digitised, stored in a memory bank, and processed. The stored signals are compared with the central portion of the image and the parts to either side of the line are compared or, for the last end, the downstream part is compared with the preceding downstream part. - This comparison produces a correction signal which controls rotation of a carpet feed control roller to position the material relative to a cutting unit with rotary cutting disc coupled with the camera. - Transversely cutting continuously woven length of patterned material along weft line of pattern symmetry. The arrangement permits ocrrect mechanical cutting in spite of deviations in the woven material e.g. due to its passage through a finishing or sizing process.(0/3)
