In a method for production of sulphur dioxide by burning of sulphur, the combustion gas formed in a primary combustion zone is subjected to an afterburning with secondary air, which is preheated by heat exchange with the gas in the primary combustion zone, and the ratio between primary air and secondary air is reduced as the temperature increases in the primary combustion zone. This achieves a stable sulphur burning and a reduced sulphur content of the combustion gas.
