PURPOSE:To obtain an element which is a liquid crystal display element of a twisted nematic type utilizing a field effect mode and has a high response speed, high contrast and good appearance, by maintaining the retardation R of a liquid crystal layer in a prescribed range. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal display element A is formed by sandwiching a liquid crystal layer 2 between upper and lower substrates 4-1, 4-2 of glass or like and disposing upper and lower polarizing plates 1, 3. The orientation of the layer 2 and the axis of polarization of the plates 1, 3 are unified in a prescribed direction so as to make a negative display. A diffusion plate 6, a filter 5 and a light source 7 are provided under the element A. Retardation R is the product of the cell thickness and double refractive index of the layer 2. Both of the cell thickness and the liquid crystal material are determined in such a way that the retardation R attains 400mmu<R<600mmu. In the case of decreasing the layer 2 and increasing the response speed, the liquid crystal having a double refractive index value corresponding to said material is selected or produced to attain the prescribed value R. |
