Retaining wall for earth or other material, comprising an assembly of superposed earth-retaining buttresses 10 and plates 7, 7a. Each buttress 10 is equipped in its upper part with a stop abutment 4 for the upper buttress 10, offset relative to the front face of the lower buttress, so that the superposed rows of buttresses and vertical plates 7a, 7c are offset relative to one another in steps, plates 7, 7b being arranged horizontally between the buttresses 10 so as to bear on their lower soles 2, and orifices 6 are formed in the buttresses 10. This arrangement makes it possible to reserve, between the superposed rows of buttresses and plates, volumes which can be filled with earth together with ornamental plants. <IMAGE>
