PURPOSE:To maintain satisfactory exhaust composition to change over smoothly the number of cylinders by shutting off or resuming ignition in corresponding cylinder immediately after intake stroke in changing over the running condition of an engine having the number of cylinders controlled while the opening operation of an intake and exhaust valves is regulated or released from the regulation. CONSTITUTION:A fuel injection valve 23 is provided in an intake port 22 of the suspension side cylinder #2 in a multiple cylinder engine and an actuator 15 for changing over the operational characteristics of intake and exhaust valves 1, 17 is provided on a cylinder head. Running condition signals of various sensors such as intake amount sensor 19 are supplied to the input of a control circuit 29 to generate engine controlling signal output. When the running is changed over from all cylinders to partial cylinders, the ignition is shut off immediately after the intake stroke of the suspension side cylinder, while the actuator 15 is operated to regulate the opening operation of the intake and exhaust valves. When the running is changed over to all the cylinders, the ignition is resumed immediately after the intake stroke, while the regulation of the intake and exhaust valves is released to burn unburnt mixture in the suspension cylinder for resuming the operation of valves. |
