The invention relates to a method of preventing the formation of soot in the off-gases of the flues of an old coking oven or a coking oven which has developed leaks in the heating walls after a lengthy period of operation, during the filling of an oven chamber or under certain operating conditions of an oven chamber. For this purpose, the feeding of the heating gas to the flues adjacent to the furnace chamber is shut off or throttled for the duration of possible passages of crude gas while at the same time maintaining the feed of combustion air. The invention also refers to a plant for the carrying out of such a method having a heating-gas distribution line and heating gas lines branching off therefrom to the flues, a heating-gas shut-off or control valve being arranged in the corresponding heating-gas line. <IMAGE>
