Process for the preparation of polyarylene sulphide

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of polyaryl sulphides having low fusion. To this end, a dihaloaromatic is reacted with an alkali metal sulphide in an amide or lactam as the solvent at temperatures between 190 and 300 DEG C in the presence of 0.03 to 1.5 mol of an alkali metal silicate per mol of alkali metal sulphide. Preferred alkali metal silicates are sodium metasilicate and potassium metasilicate in the form of their hydrates.
