A DC linear motor with a permanent magnet arrangement having a ferromagnetic return path, and with a multi-strand winding which can move linearly with respect to one another. The winding consists of a plurality of coils which follow one another in the movement direction and to which current is applied in a cyclic sequence. The coils are in each case laid around a pole of at least one flux guiding part. Together with the permanent magnet arrangement, the flux guiding part forms an essentially flat air gap. The coil axes are at right angles to the movement direction. The ratio of the coil pitch to the magnet pitch is 2:3. The motor is intended especially for drives in data technology. At least two flux guiding parts are seated with the associated coils symmetrically on opposite sides of the permanent magnet arrangement in a common soft-magnetic return path part, which engages around the flux guiding parts, the coils and the part of the magnet arrangement lying between them. <IMAGE>
