A method for determining critically reduced battery capacity in small battery-operated apparatuses, especially clocks, and a circuit arrangement for carrying out the method are intended to be designed in such a manner that they no longer require any functionally critical analog circuit components when implemented within an integrated, digital circuit, and provide a reproducible drive of a warning circuit (14) even in energy-critical operating states. To this end, a sensor (10) detects the actual function of the converter (7), especially of a stepping motor, in comparison with its electrical drive in order to implement a drive with increased energy in the case of operating disturbances; operation which exceeds a predetermined time interval (Tn) with an increased drive energy for driving a warning circuit (13) leading to replacement of the battery (8) as soon as possible with respect to the requirement. <IMAGE>
