PURPOSE:To inexpensively obtain a base material contg. metallic halide as a dopant for a glass fiber for optical communication, etc. by generating gas of metallic halide with a high b.p. in a container and immediately feeding the gas to a blowoff nozzle for starting material for glass. CONSTITUTION:Metallic halide with a high b.p. is put in a vaporizing container 4 and kept at a constant temp. By blowing an inert gas into the container 4, gaseous metallic halide is generated, and it is fed to the tube 1c of the 3rd layer of the nozzle 1 of a multi-tubed burner. At the same time, gaseous starting material for glass, gaseous fuel, an inert gas and gaseous O2 are fed to the tubes 1a, 1b, 1d, 1e, respectively. The nozzle 1 is ignited, and in the resulting flame the vapor phase chemical reaction of the gaseous starting material for glass with the gaseous metallic halide is caused to form sootlike fine glass powder. By sticking and depositing the powder on the outside or the tip of a rodlike substrate 12, a porous base material 13 for a glass fiber is obtd. |
