Production of a water-soluble acid-curing resin for lacquers. The resin is a copolymer of an unsaturated N-methylol amide compound, preferably N-methylol acryl amide or N-methylol methacryl amide, and a monoglycol ester of an unsaturated acid, preferably butane diol monoacrylate or butane diol methacrylate. The polymerization is performed in an alcohol, preferably ethyl alcohol, in the presence of a free radical initiator such as benzoyl peroxide. After finished polymerization the alcohol is expelled and replaced with water in which the copolymer dissolves. Upon addition of acid such as hydrochloric acid or paratoluene sulphonic acid the water-soluble copolymer cures into a water-insoluble state. The water-soluble copolymer is useful as the main constituent of acid-curing water-based lacquers.
|
