PURPOSE:To improve the quality of a billet and to prevent bulging, by providing a specific stress relieving groove in the neck part of a roll, thereby decreasing the diameter of the body part of the roll and reducing advantageously the roll pitch. CONSTITUTION:The roll neck part 2 with respect to a roll body part 1 is formed to 1.2-4.0 relation D/d between the diameter D of the roll and the diameter (d) of the roll neck. The depth delta of a stress relieving groove 6 is set at 5-50mm.. The radius R of curvature in the forward end part of the groove 6 complies with the equation: R<={(D-d)/2-t}X1/2. The wall thickness (t) in the overhang part here is set at 5-100mm..
