A picture frame is tensioned by means of four wedges which are arranged at an angle of 45 degrees to the frame sides and are, at the corners of the frame, inserted into corresponding grooves in the obliquely sawn-off end surfaces of the frame sides. A woven canvas fastened to the frame is stretched to approximately the same extent in the warp direction and the weft direction.
