The hot rod travels along a cooling tube, in which a coolant flows in either the same or the opposite direction w.r.t. the movement of the rod. The pressurised coolant, which is pref. water, is fed into the cooling tube via an oblique ring slot in an injector, the slot being oriented in the direction of coolant flow and leading to an axial hole with a smaller dia. than the bore of the cooling tube. The pref. device uses at least one venturi in the cooling tube, where the outlet of the venturi is larger than the bore of the cooling tube; and the angle at the apex of the divergent cone in the venturi is pref. 6 degrees, which is also the pref. angle for the convergent cone in the venturi. The cooling tube is pref. also provided with flattened zones forming constrictions. Used in cooling of rods etc. leaving a die or a rolling mill.
