PURPOSE:To lower the fuel consumption, for instance, at the time of idling operation of an internal combustion engine, by controlling fuel injection means and electromagnetic clutches disposed between valve shafts and a driving shaft interlocked with a crankshaft by means of a micro computor according to the operational conditions of the engine. CONSTITUTION:In an internal combustion engine, for instance, of a four-cycle four- cylinder type, an intake valve 18 for opening and closing intake ports 20-2, 20-3 and an exhaust valve 19 for opening and closing exhaust ports 20-1, 20-4 are formed as rotary valves interlocked with a valve shaft 17. Further, electromagnetic clutches 24-1-24-4 are disposed between respective valve shafts 17 and a driving shaft 26 interlocked with a crankshaft by a gear 27. With such an arrangement, the engine is operated with a minimum number of cylinders, for instance, at the time of its idling operation by detecting the output signals of an accelerator pedal and a tachometer by a micro computer and affording signals to fuel injection means F and the electromagnetic clutches 24-1-24-4. Here, the electromagnetic clutches for cylinders which are kept at rest are so controlled that they are uncoupled at the position where the intake valves 18 are closed and the exhaust valves 19 are opened. |
