The braking arrangement (12) according to the invention has brake cylinders (13) lying transversely to the vehicle (7) and having cones (19) at their ends. The brake cylinders (13) are pressurised hydraulically by integrated application cylinders and expand under the influence of compression springs. The contact rollers (32) of brake levers (34, 35) pivotable in vertical planes rest against the end cones (19) of the brake cylinders (13). When the brake cylinders (13) are displaced, the rollers (32) move on the cones (19) and thereby pivot the brake levers (34, 35), with the result that the brake shoes (15) come to rest against the horizontal flange (5) of the running rail (3). The transverse arrangement of the brake cylinder (13) in conjunction with the cones (19) ensures a uniform braking force on all the running rails (3) while the hitherto necessary expenditure involved with brake cylinders arranged in the longitudinal direction of running rails and with brake levers pivotable transversely thereto is halved.
