PURPOSE:To obtain a facsimile character recognizer which has the reduced probability for incapability of character recognition and a short transmitting time, by varying selectively the linear density of the picture signal which is transmitted via a communication circuit. CONSTITUTION:When an input original is read by a scanner 202 with the highest linear density, the surface information is transferred to a compressing/expanding circuit 216 by a linear density selecting circuit 204 and then coded to be stored in a memory 210. The picture signal sent to a compressing/expanding circuit 206 undergoes band compression and is transmitted to a facsimile receiving device 300 from an MODEM208 through a circuit 100. The picture signal received at an MODEM308 is expanded by a compressing/expanding circuit 306 to be decoded to the original raster scanning picture signal and transmitted to a character recognizer 400. When a character which cannot be recognized by the recognizer 400 is detected, the recognition is discontinued. Then the generation of the recognition unable character is informed to the circuit 306. A facsimile transmitting device 200 receives the signal from the circuit 306 through the MODEM 208, and this signal is discriminated by the circuit 206. The circuit 206 informs the generation of the recongnition unable character to the circuit 204 through a signal line 212. |
