In a chain lock for link chains, a locking arrangement, to which a preassembled unit consisting of a retaining element (1) and of a spreading element (5) belongs, is used. The spreading element (5) has an essentially oval initial shape in the unspread state. It can be introduced by hand into the region of catch recesses (8) of the inner legs (6, 7) of lock halves of the chain lock. A locking of the lock halves is obtained by the rotation of the spreading element (5) in the region of the catch recesses (8). The spreading element (5) pivoted through 90 DEG can subsequently be transferred by means of a hammer into its end position, in which it is supported on a cylindrical catch part (3) of the retaining element (1). <IMAGE>
