In order to be able to burn wood chips and/or sawdust and large pieces of waste wood, alternately or simultaneously, in a heating boiler without modifications, this heating boiler has a combustion space to which an underfeed conveyor device, a combustion air supply device, an exhaust gas duct and a heat exchange device are connected, characterised in that the combustion space contains a boiler grate which takes up 40-80% of the cross-sectional surface of the combustion space, that the underfeed conveyor device opens into an underfeed charging trough which takes up the portion of the cross-sectional surface left free by the boiler grate, and that in addition to the underfeed conveyor device at least one manual filling opening is provided on the lateral and/or upper combustion chamber wall.
