A forced air dry roaster for home roasting or drying a variety of products is provided with variable output electrical heater (25) and a variable speed fan (5) for blowing a stream of heated air into and through an upright tubular chamber (8) so as to fluidise and heat the product (47) placed in the bottom of the chamber. The heater output and the fan speed are independently adjusted to suit the product and the processing desired, but irrespective of the settings the flow of air to the chamber (8) from the fan (5) is substantially undamped to maintain efficient and uniform heating of the product. The heater (25) may also be thermostatically controlled in response to a thermistor (28) which is located in the chamber (8) and is connected to a temperature indicator and thermostat control (29). The roaster may also have a timer for switching off the heater automatically after a preset time and possibly also automatically switching off the fan (5) after a preset time.
