PURPOSE:To improve the operability as well as the efficiency of diagnosis in an observation mode for a picture processor, by calculating the optimum window level from the distribution of picture data within a concerned area and writing a gradation converting code on a gradation converting circuit according to said window level. CONSTITUTION:An address is designated to a picture memory 1 by a concerned area setting circuit 6 and a concerned area 9 is set in a displayed picture 8. Thus the picture data in the area 9 is sent to a window level arithmetic circuit 7 from a memory 1. The circuit 7 confirms the minimum value (a) and the maximum value (b) of the picture data in the area 9 and then calculates the optimum window level for extraction of the picture data. Based on this optimum level, the gradation conversion codes are written on a gradation converting circuit 2 for conversion of the data between both values (a) and (b) into 0-256 gradations. Thus the circuit 2 gives conversion of gradation to the picture data read out of the memory 1 according to the codes. As a result, the pictures to be observed within the area 9 are displayed on a display device 3 in a wide range of 0-256 gradations and can be observed in detail.
