<p>NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I [R<1> is H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl or phenylalkyl; R<2> is H, OH or alkoxy; R<3> is H, halogen, alkanoyloxy or group of formula II (R<4> and R<6> are alkyl; R<5> is alkanoyl); the bond between the 3- and 4-positions of carbostyryl skeleton is single or double; the position of CH2R<3> is 3-8 position of carbostyryl skeleton] and its salt. EXAMPLE:3-Hydroxymethylcarbostyryl. USE:The compound has antiulcer activity in itself, and is also useful as a synthetic intermediate of a compound having excellent antiulcer activity and remarkably effective to prevent and remedy chronic ulcer. PROCESS:A compound of formula I wherein R<3> is OH can be prepared by reducing the carboxylic acid compound of formula II directly or after esterification. The product can be converted to another compound of formula I wherein R<3> is halogen or group of formula III by successively reacting with a halogenation agent and the compound of formula IV.</p> |
