In a joint fitting for seats, in particular for motor vehicle seats, a fixed joint component which is assigned to the seat component and a swivellable joint component which is assigned to the backrest are connected to one another via a swivel axis. On this swivel axis, a toothed locking plate is arranged in whose toothing a locking element which is held on the fixed joint component engages releasably. In addition, the locking plate is provided in its upper circumferential area with a recess whose two ends form stops, the first stop of which, lying at the rear in the seat positions of the backrest, assigned a counterstop which is secured to the swivellable joint component, whilst the second stop, lying at the front, interacts with a locking latch forming the counterstop. This locking latch is mounted on an axle pin mounted on the swivellable joint component. In order, even in the event of an accident, to be able to keep the outlay of material and thus the weight of the joint fitting low by means of harmonic tension distribution in conjunction with selective deformations of the components, the locking element is constructed as a locking slide which is displaceably mounted on the fixed joint component and has a locking tooth segment, and each end of the locking tooth segment is supported by support pins which guide the locking slide, the locking plate having a recess which deforms when overloaded in the locking direction and being engaged around in its rear bearing eye region by a support body secured to the swivellable joint component.
