Method and apparatus for compacting granular materials

In the production of foundry moulds, the moulding material is compacted by means of an exothermic reaction of an air/fuel mixture. A relative motion between the combustible mixture and one or more impulse triggers (19) is produced in a combustion chamber (23) during the exothermic reaction. This is preferably accomplished by means of a blower (20) arranged in the combustion chamber (23). Prior to this, the moulding material is introduced by means of a sand hopper (17) into a mould frame (11) and a filling frame (12) over a pattern (6).
