Ground bituminous schist is preheated 20 and heated to the distillation temperature in a rotating retort 12 using hotter ceramic beads which are delivered by a conduit 16 and are recycled after having passed through the retort with the schist. The invention restricts the damage to the beads due to thermal shocks while raising the efficiency of the plant to the maximum, by determining the critical beads/schist weight ratio and maintaining an optimum ratio which is slightly higher than this critical ratio for the temperature difference recorded during the process between the beads and the schist. <IMAGE>
