At the front of the machine are separating fingers for the cut stalks, with teeth projecting sideways into the gaps between, which travel inwards to carry the stalks into the interior. These teeth are attached to chains with are followed by further inner chains (60) with interlocking zig-zag elements (56) which convey the stalks further inwards. Pulleys driving both chains are mounted on common spindles (50), and adjacent to the front pulley (63) for an inner chain is a jockey pulley (62) mounted on a spring loaded arm (70). The other end of the arm is attached to a sleeve (72) which can rotate about a vertical spindle (74) secured by a bolt to a carrier (76). Connected to the carrier is a spindle which can slide axially against the force of a spring (96) which it carries. This controls the swing of the jockey pulley arm (70).
