Process for preparing a 2-arylpropionic acid

Useful 2-arylpropionic acids are prepared, as antiinflammatory agents, by direct reaction of arylmagnesium bromides with an organic complex consisting of magnesium chloride or bromide and alpha-bromopropionic acid, and then acidification of the reaction product. The aryl moiety is selected from 6-methoxy-2-naphthyl, 4-alkylphenyl and 4'-fluoro-4-biphenyl. The reaction is carried out in an aprotic organic solvent which contains an ether.
