The invention relates to a protective solution for the preservation of functional cells. Features of the solution are that it contains, in addition, sucrose, that the phosphate buffer is at a high concentration, the osmolarity of the solution being 330 +/- 10 mOsm and its pH 7.3 +/- 0.2, and that it can be mixed with red cells of human or animal origin, with other blood cells such as leukocytes and platelets, and with cell suspensions originating from various organs, either for their long-term preservation, of the order of one week, in the same place after thawing, or for their preservation during transportation. The invention finds application more especially in the pharmaceutical field and in the fields of transfusion, of bio-engineering and of the biological sciences. <IMAGE>
