The device, which in particular also permits simple and quick manual conversion of the hoisting cage for the winding of material or for man-riding, consists of a gate arranged at the open side of the cage and having two or more gate parts which are arranged one above the other and can be pushed together telescopically next to one another or inside one another in the vertical direction of the gate and of which in each case one gate part guides the next lower gate part in the lateral direction of the gate. The topmost gate part is suspended on the roof of the cage, and a lifting device which is driven by a stored-energy device acts on the lowermost gate part.
