A hole punch, in particular a large-sized hole punch for simultaneously perforating a thick pile of paper sheets has a gear mechanism which is functionally assigned to a handle in order to move vertically a pair of paper-holding plates, the holding plates cooperating with a pair of cylindrical punching elements provided on a base. In the hole punch, the force required to move the handle for the perforating operation is considerably reduced. A baseplate having a pair of openings for defining a passage for in each case one punching element is mounted rotatably and vertically on the base and is normally upwardly prestressed in order to facilitate removal of the punching element from a thick pile of paper sheets after performing a perforating operation. The punching elements and paper-holding plates are removably fixed to the base and the gear mechanism, so that they can be easily exchanged for new ones.
