A process is described for the distillation of a 2-isocyanatoalkyl ester of an alpha , beta -ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid from a liquid mixture, which process comprises distilling the isocyanatoalkyl ester in the presence of an amount of gaseous nitrogen oxide, which has the effect of inhibiting vinyl polymerisation of the isocyanatoalkyl ester. The use of a nitrogen oxide inhibits the formation of a popcorn polymer.
