PURPOSE:To reduce the overall height of cylinder head, by arranging a stopping device collectively on one side of control valve, in a multi-valve type engine having more than three control valves one of which is rendered inoperative in a low and medium-speed range. CONSTITUTION:A pivot arm 9 is freely pivotably provided on a supporting shaft 10 horizontally mounted on a cylinder head 1 at one side of control valve 4. A cam follower 7 for the control valve 4 is freely pivotably journaled on the pivot arm 9 and has a valve moving cam 8 provided thereon. The pivot arm 9 further has a shift fork 11 provided at the outer periphery of journaling section thereof. The shift fork 11 is adapted to controllably shift in the axial direction. By controllably shifting the shift fork 11, the pivoting movement of pivot arm 9 can be controlled in such a manner that the cam follower 7 can be selectively retained at an operating position where it comes into contact with the cam 8 and at a recess position where it does not contact with the cam 8. |
