The invention relates to a process for the drying of veneers. Known processes, such as convective drying or contact drying, have specific problems as well as advantages. The advantages are to be united and the problems eliminated by the process according to the invention. According to the invention, the free water is removed in a first drying stage, drying thus being to about the range of fiber saturation, and final drying takes place in a second drying stage. Thereby a pre-drying without encasing is achieved in the first drying stage, e.g. by convective drying, and a flat veneer, free from shrinkage cracks, is attained in the second drying stage by contact drying below fibre saturation.
