PURPOSE:To obtain durability to partial deformation in terms of feature extraction and to improve the precision of recognition, by the degree of contribution of each feature to respective points on a two-dimensional surface and evaluating the correspondence between an input feature and a mask feature on the two- dimensional surface. CONSTITUTION:A preprocessing part 203 segments the pattern of one character to generate a binary pattern. A contour point/contour segment extracting part 204 extracts a contour point and a contour segment from the binary pattern. A contribution degree converting and compressing part 205 converts each contour segment into a pattern which decreases in value according to the leaving distance from a point where the contour segment is present, and further performs compressing operation for reducing the amount of data. A matching part 206 compares a contour segment list and a compression contribution degree pattern with a mask as a feature for each category, category by category, and a maximum value detecting part 207 decides on the most suitable category lastly. |
