<p>Technical field: telescopic steering shafts. Feature: telescopic steering shaft for motor vehicles, which comprises an outer element (2) and an inner element (3), the latter being partially engaged in the outer element, coaxially with the latter, the inner element having faces (7, 7') spaced apart circumferentially and extending over the length of the said element and parallel to the axis of the shaft, these faces (7, 7') fitting with a predetermined clamping against the corresponding faces (6, 6') of the outer element so that the shaft is capable of transmitting a torque in both directions and is capable of contracting under the effect of a predetermined axial force, characterised in that one of the faces of the inner element (3) is in constant engagement with projections (4) formed on the inner wall (5) of one of the faces (6) of the wall of the outer element (2), and in that the distribution of the said projections (4) ensures the axial retention and the guidance of the inner element (3) in the outer element (2).
