The present invention relates to an assistance method for facilitating traffic flow as well as to a device for implementing this method. A stretch of roadway 40, on which a vehicle 41 passes, is equipped with a magnetic code marking in the form of transverse bars such as the bar 44, whose thickness and spacing are defined as a function of the code chosen. The vehicle 41 is equipped with a detection loop 42 and with a detector device 43 intended to detect and to interpret the coded marking carried by the roadway. The information thus picked up is transmitted to the driver by light or sound signals or by an alphanumeric display. This system supplies assistance to the driver of a vehicle travelling on the road network and may replace the road map while improving on it. <IMAGE>
