Process for the preparation of paints and varnishes. In the process of the invention an aqueous sequestering solution is prepared first of all, intended to passivate caustic soda, containing a compound or colloid which has an acidic functional group and a volatile base in excess, intended to neutralise this acidic functional group and to give this solution a high pH, for example from 9 to 9.5, and this sequestering solution is then mixed, with stirring, with the polychloroprene latex and excess caustic soda is added to this mixture, the preparation being completed by washing with water and heating to moderate temperature.
